Keeping our shelter safe from fires

While fires raged this week in many parts of Attica, just across the Saronic Gulf from Aegina, we are keeping our island safe so far, with the diligent attention of our local firefighters. As many of you know, our dog shelter is in the middle of a forest, so we are always aware of the danger. This year, the fire road leading to the shelter was graded by the Ministry using two large graders. As a result, the road is twice as wide and free of large rocks. Trees and bushes lining the road were removed.

We have also cleaned up around the perimeter of our shelter, and of course, we have an emergency exit at the back of the shelter. We have an evacuation plan.  If there is time, we have a number of people with cars who will come up (easier with the improved road) and get the dogs and take them to specific locations. If there is not enough time to do this, we will open the emergency exit and let the dogs go free down the side of the mountain, which is rocky and covered with bushes but not forest land.

In the meantime, we know that groups of volunteer “fire-watchers” are working in different places on the island, and our fire department in Aegina is always on guard. It is a constant worry for us, but we simply do everything we can to stay watchful.

As for the animals caught in the fires in Attica, the group called Dogs’ Voice cooperates with authorities to release dogs locked in houses, yards, balconies, or found wandering, and bring them to an emergency center where the dogs are examined, given medical care if needed, and kept in a collection area until owners are found, or stray dogs are adopted or taken into foster care. Cats are also rescued and the group ‘Anima’ rescues wild animals.
